Dear Guest,

Like many of you, I have made The Algarve a place that I visit regularly and the Hotel Dona Filipa has been my first choice since I first stayed in the hotel more than 10 years ago. I have always been highly impressed with the quality of personal service that the hotel's staff provides and consider them to be the most valued asset to the property.

JJW Hotels & Resorts is proud to announce that as of 25th November 2008, the group is operating Hotel Dona Filipa and San Lorenzo Golf Course along with its other hotels in Portugal, Austria, UK, France, and the Middle East.

Throughout all my hotels, I constantly strive to improve the properties through refurbishment and development and you can expect to hear some exciting announcements in 2009. Plans are already under way for the refurbishment of Dona Filipa to bring the property back to the high standards it deserves, whilst still maintaining the essence of the character of the hotel that we have all become so familiar with.

In the mean time, apart from the new branding, we hope you will observe minimal changes within the daily running of the hotel and golf course. Indeed, it will be the same staff that will be greeting you on arrival, serving you in the restaurants and cleaning your rooms. Some of those staff, I know, have been as loyal to the hotel as you have and many have worked here for more than 20 years, some even up to 40 years!

Our other properties in the Algarve include the exclusive Pinheiros Altos Golf & Leisure Resort which features a 27-hole golf course and is located on the edge of the picturesque Ria Formosa National Park. Due to open in November 2009 is the Royal Algarve Hotel, which graces the highest point of Pinheiros Altos with views over the golf course and Ludo Valley. Also in our portfolio is the 4-star Amarante Formosa Park apart-hotel.

Competing with another 323 locations across the country, the Ria Formosa Estuary and Natural Park was recently elected as one of the 7 Natural Wonder of Portugal. The sotavento ecosystem obtained the most votes in the category of Marine Areas. This recognition will most certainly reinforce the potential market of nature tourism in the Algarve; such as bird watching.

The President of the Algarve Tourism Board, Nuno Aires states: "This distinction reveals the great esteem that the Portuguese - and we share - for this the natural landscape. Hitting a Hole in One at San Lorenzo

Congratulations to Mr. Dennis Shawcross

Occasionally in a golfer's life, a combination of luck, skill, perfect conditions... and a perfectly struck gold stroke all come together to pull off the golfing holy grail. A hole in one.

For San Lorenzo - and Dona Filipa Hotel - regular, Dennis Shawcross, such an achievement is to be savoured for a very long time to come:

"My wife told just about everyone about it." Grins Dennis as he recalls the shot he took at the end of August 2011, "the sixteenth is a very hard hole... and the wind was of assistance that day."

Wind assisted or not... it takes something very special to hit a hole in one on any part of the San Lorenzo course, least of all on the famously tough sixteenth.

"My wife and I have been coming to Dona Filipa for over 20 years," he continues, "we have seen the staff go from juniors to senior management... everyone helps to make our holiday enjoyable every time we come; from reception through to the restaurant and bar and at San Lorenzo golf Course. Paul the starter at San Lorenzo keeps everyone in order in the nicest possible way and to get a hole in one has just put the icing on the cake!"

Dennis and his wife are planning to return to play San Lorenzo in the near future...

We're not sure he'll be able to match his extreme feat of a hole in one any time soon; but like all of our treasured guests at Dona Filipa & San Lorenzo Golf Course - we can't wait to see them again.

Today's Golfer has just released the results of its brand new Travel Awards. The Algarve has been voted the best golfing destination in the whole of Europe...

And - impressively - San Lorenzo has been named in the top three out of all the courses in the country.

Ongoing Improvements at San Lorenzo:

Clubhouse & Store Refurbishment

San Lorenzo Golf Club is pleased to announce the completion of our latest refurbishment work.

This year the course has been working hard to deliver improved amenities, and a clubhouse befitting one of the finest courses in the Algarve.

We took on board the changes you said you wanted to see at the clubhouse... and this year we've been making them happen.

During the past four months the exterior of the clubhouse has undergone intrinsic and cosmetic restoration work and been given a fresh coat of paint... whilst a fleet of new parasols have made a welcome addition to the terrace.

Most Recently Completed

The ladies bathroom has just undergone an extensive refurbishment, receiving a new floor and lighting... along with newly renovated walls and ceiling that have left the area looking fantastic.

The bathrooms were top of the list when it came to changes that members wanted to see, and we're very happy to have been able to deliver these changes as requested.

What's Coming Next?

Over the coming two months the men's bathroom will also be receiving a full refurbishment and renovation. Along with the ladies' bathroom, this was one of the major areas that the members wanted to see redeveloped.

In the next six months the club will also be re-carpeting the entire clubhouse and store.

San Lorenzo Golf Club is delighted to be able to make all these improvements for the benefit of our members... and we hope that everyone is enjoying - and benefitting - from the improvements being made.

Work Underway on Hole 15 of San Lorenzo

Ground Works Taking Place this June at San Lorenzo Golf Course

The works on the 15th tee of San Lorenzo Golf Course are due to be completed by Thursday 15th June 2013.

We greatly apologise for any inconvenience experienced during this time... but rest assured the course will greatly benefit from this speedy improvement work.

At present we are progressing with these works on the left hand side of hole 15 and part of the fairway, which may slightly interfere with your game. The area is classified as GUR - Ground Under Repair and is marked with blue stakes.

If the ball lies in the area of the GUR the player must lift the ball and drop it within one club-length of the nearest point of relief, but not nearer the hole (Rule 25-1b(i)).

For any ball lost in the abnormal ground condition (the GUR) - if there is reasonable evidence that the ball was lost in the area GUR, the spot where the ball last crossed the limits shall be determined and the player may drop another ball within one club-length from that spot according to Rule 25-1b(i).

We look forward to opening the hole back up in its entirety shortly... and hope that you will enjoy the fruits of our improvement works - and the wonderful golf that can be experienced at our Algarve course.

For the 25th year in a row, San Lorenzo Golf Course has been named one of the Top 100 Courses in Continental Europe. The ranking, awarded by the industry leading Golf World Magazine, further cements San Lorenzo's position at the very pinnacle of European golf.

In the same list, San Lorenzo, which is owned and operated by JJW Hotels and Resorts, was also named one of the top 5 golf courses in Portugal.

About San Lorenzo Golf Course

Designed by US golf course architects Joseph Lee and Rocky Roquemore, San Lorenzo has been consistently voted one of the best in Europe for over 25 years. San Lorenzo Golf Course is delighted to announce that it is has been nominated for an award in the 'Best Golf Course' category at the Publituris Portugal Travel Awards 2016. The awards aim to reward the best companies, services and professionals in Portugal's tourism industry across 20 different categories. Portugal, and in particular the Algarve, is home to some of the world's most popular and prestigious golfing destinations, and we are proud to be in the running for the title of the best golf course in the country.

Publituris is Portugal's largest tourism publication and has a readership largely made up of tourism industry professionals, such as hoteliers and operators, alongside those working in agencies, tourist offices, golf courses and associated organisations.
