Bordering the Ria Formosa Estuary

The 18 holes lie in the unspoilt Southeast corner of Quinta do Lago, bordering the Ria Formosa Estuary and salt water lagoons.

The course was designed by the American golf architect Joseph Lee and the beautiful Bermuda grass fairways provide perfect playing conditions.

The San Lorenzo Golf Course is laid out in a figure of eight and at the heart lies the San Lorenzo Clubhouse with a golf pro shop; comfortable changing facilities; welcoming bar and restaurant.

Holes 1 - 4

After an inviting but unreachable par 5 to open the San Lorenzo Golf Course there is a respite over the next four holes, where no demands are made on excessive length.

Hole 5

The fifth, the shortest hole on the San Lorenzo Golf Course, open up a magnificent vista with the backdrop of golden beaches and the Atlantic Ocean. Drama beings to unfold at the sixth hole where the San Lorenzo Golf Course borders the estuary and great demands are put on accuracy.

Hole 6

Six is a dogleg and rated Stroke Index 1. Standing on the tee, looking out to the sea, the temptation is to try to cut the corner with the drive; unless you get the line and distance just right, you will be penalised by landing in dense shrub. Once the corner is turned, the green becomes visible, kicked off to the right - club selection is paramount.

Hole 7

The seventh, again, plays from an elevated tee. The Ria Formosa estuary seems to act as a magnet for a slice; the green is almost entirely surrounded by water, making club selection crucial.

Hole 8

The eighth hole turns inland and is without a doubt one of the most spectacular par 5s, bordering the largest of the inland lakes and forcing the third shot to carry water to a tight but beautifully positioned green. With the lake to your right, the tendency is to favour the left side; however, caution is necessary as bunkers and encroaching pines lie and wait on this side.

Hole 9

A demanding drive up a gentle valley is required to give you a clear shot to the green at the ninth which brings you back to the San Lorenzo Clubhouse.

Hole 10

The par tenth requires an impressive drive across the smaller of the two lakes and only the longest of players will be able to attempt to get home in two.

Hole 11

The eleventh provides the alternative dramatic vista of an inland mountain range seemingly perched behind the green.

Holes 12 - 16

The twelfth beings a run of four holes taking you back towards the Atlantic Ocean. This is without a doubt the most demanding hole on the San Lorenzo Golf Course with a deep chasm running along the left-hand side of a narrow fairway - a par 4 here is certainly worth an extra shot.

By the sixteenth the San Lorenzo Golf Course has swung to the west and this is the toughest pf par 3s with a full 180 m (197 yds) carry to a very shallow green, once again par is a bonus.

Hole 17

We turn back inland at the seventeenth which is a stunningly beautiful hole with the lake being in play from tee to green all along the left side and a fairway bounded by towering reeds. A good drive here should leave no problem with the second to an inviting green although the lake still has a presence.

The last two holes which will probably stay in your memory forever - particularly the eighteenth - certainly they will make or break your score!

Hole 18

It is difficult to describe the breathtaking finale that awaits you at the eighteenth. Here without a doubt is one of the finest finishes in golf that you will ever experience, and has become world renowned. There is no escape from the water here and the prefect drive merely lessens the challenge of a shot across water left and right, back and front to a tiny targeted green.

Simply Spectacular

The San Lorenzo Golf Course is simply spectacular we continue to improve and add to its natural beauty wherever possible.

There are golf courses and golf courses and only a few leave you with vivid lasting memories and the feeling of being 3 m (10 feet) tall as you walk off the last green - San Lorenzo Golf Course is one.
